Irati Forest is one of the most impressive forests in Europe, a gigantic beech-fir forest located in the Navarrese Pyrenees that offers pure nature all year round. With more than 17,000 hectares of practically untouched forest, it is a paradise for those looking for hiking routes, photogenic landscapes, wildlife, and a total break from the urban pace.

It is one of the most visited destinations in Navarre, especially in autumn, when its leaves put on a spectacular display of colors that attracts photographers, trekking enthusiasts, and travelers who want to experience something truly unique in nature.

🌳 Forest bathing in Irati: much more than hiking

More and more people are talking about forest bathing, and few places fit this idea as well as Irati Forest.
It is not just about walking, but about taking the time to breathe slowly, listen to the silence of the forest
and let nature’s rhythm set the pace.

Instead of doing a route while thinking in kilometers, you can spend a morning strolling unhurriedly along an easy trail,
sit by a stream, notice the moisture in the ground, watch how the light changes among the leaves, or simply close your
eyes for a few minutes. Irati invites exactly that: disconnecting from noise and reconnecting with yourself.

  • Walk in silence for a while, without your phone, just listening to the wind and the birds.
  • Find a comfortable log or rock and spend a few minutes observing the surroundings.
  • Pay attention to the small details: the moss, the drops of water, the crunch of the leaves.
  • Take several deep breaths, making the most of the clean air in the beech forest.

After a day like that, returning to Casa Angiz, taking a shower, having a quiet dinner, and remembering the walk is often
almost as restorative as the forest bath itself. Irati is not just a place for routes; it is a place to
slow down.

 – Recommended hiking routes

Here is a practical comparison of the most popular routes in Irati.

🌲 Recommended routes in Irati Forest by level

If this is your first time in Irati Forest, it can be hard to choose where to start.
Here is a selection of very representative routes in the forest, with different difficulty
levels, to organize your day of hiking in Irati.

⛰️ Azalegi – San Esteban Hermitage
Distance: 6.4 km
Elevation gain: 350 m
Difficulty: Medium
Circular route through pastures and grassy hills, with spectacular panoramic views
toward peaks such as Ori, Mendilatz, or Abodi. In addition, the area contains
Civil War bunkers, which add a historical touch to the route.
It is ideal for hikers with some experience who want to combine
open landscapes, viewpoints, and a somewhat more demanding but non-technical route.

🌳 Plaza Beunza Trail (Irabia Reservoir)
Distance: 4.4 km
Elevation gain: ≈ 90–120 m
Difficulty: Easy – Moderate
A beautiful out-and-back route through a very lush beech forest, with a stretch close to the water
and a slightly higher return. The atmosphere is very humid and shady, typical of Irati’s forests.
Perfect for families and people who want to enjoy a
woodland walk with little elevation gain, surrounded by large beech trees and with the reservoir as the main feature.

🪨 Arpea Cave Route
Distance: 1.8 km (round trip)
Elevation gain: ≈ 120 m
Difficulty: Very easy
Short walk from an asphalt road to an impressive geological fold, where the rock
seems to bend over itself, forming a kind of natural shelter. It is one of the most curious
and photogenic spots in the area.
Ideal for families, for those who want to walk a little but see something very different
and to combine the excursion with a visit to the Orbaizeta Arms Factory and the megalithic area
of Azpegi.

As you can see, in Irati Forest you have options for all levels: from an easy walk to
slightly more demanding routes with great views. If you stay at Casa Angiz, we can help you choose
the route that best fits your fitness level, available time, and the time of year. 🌿

🌙 MYTHS AND LEGENDS OF IRATI FOREST

Irati Forest, besides being one of the largest beech-fir forests in Europe, is also a setting full of mysterious tales, ancient stories, and mythological characters deeply rooted in Basque-Navarrese culture. Its lushness, its silence, and the mist that often envelops it have fueled legends passed down from generation to generation for centuries.

Below, I present the most important and fascinating ones.

 – The Lamia: feminine spirit of the rivers

The lamias are female creatures of enormous beauty that live in the rivers and bridges of Irati. According to tradition:

  • They have duck feet, although everything else looks human.

  • They comb their long hair with golden combs while singing.

  • Sometimes they help shepherds or lost walkers.

  • Other times they enchant those who come too close.

The crystal-clear streams of Irati, with their wooden bridges and the echo of the water, are the perfect setting where the valley’s inhabitants placed the appearances of these mysterious women.

 – Basajaun: lord of the forest

In the deepest corners of Irati lives, according to Basque mythology, the Basajaun:

  • A gigantic, hairy being.

  • Protector of animals and trees.

  • Knower of ancient secrets of nature.

  • Friend of shepherds, but enemy of those who damage the forest.

Many older shepherds spoke of the sound of broken branches or heavy footsteps in remote areas… signs they attributed to Basajaun watching over his forest.

 – The spirit of the beech forest: the Wandering Cloud

Fog is one of Irati’s most characteristic elements. According to an old legend, a cloud with a mind of its own wanders through the beech forest to:

  • Protect travelers who walk the correct path.

  • Confuse those who go in without respect or permission.

They say that if you enter the forest with bad intentions, the fog will become denser; but if you come with a calm soul, the cloud will open to show you the way.

 – The Genesis of Irati: the legend of the Primordial Tree

A little-known story speaks of a sacred tree, the first of the entire forest. According to tradition:

  • It would hide the vital force of Irati beneath its roots.

  • Only someone who enters the forest with a pure heart can see it.

  • If the tree were to fall, the entire forest would disappear.

Although no one has managed to identify it, many believe it is near the Irabia Reservoir, where the vegetation is so dense that hardly any light gets through.

 – The Sorginak: witches of the Navarrese Pyrenees

In the forest clearings and on the slopes of the Pyrenees lived, according to tradition, the sorginak:

  • Wise women with knowledge of plants, healing, and rituals.

  • They gathered in “akelarres” near caves and ancient hermitages.

  • They held nighttime meetings under the full moon.

The sorginak symbolize the mix between mystery, ancestral medicine, and the stories told by the fire in Navarrese farmhouses.

 – The Serpent of Irabia

The oldest people in the valley tell of the existence of a gigantic serpent that lived at the bottom of the Irabia Reservoir:

  • It only emerged when the water level dropped.

  • It was said to protect the forest’s secrets.

  • Its appearance announced important changes in the valley’s life.

Although it is only a myth, many visitors feel that Irabia has something “deeply alive.”

 – The Echo of the Whistler

One of the more recent legends says that, if you walk very early among the beech trees, you may hear a soft, melancholy whistle:

  • It does not belong to any known animal.

  • It does not follow a human melody.

  • According to tradition, it is the echo of a shepherd who got lost centuries ago and whose spirit still wanders through Irati.

Many hikers claim to have heard it without ever finding anyone nearby.

🎒 What to bring to visit Irati Forest by season

One of the things we repeat most at Casa Angiz is that in Irati Forest
the weather can change very quickly ⛅. Even if you leave in sunshine, you may run into fog, cool wind, or
an unexpected shower. That is why we always tell our guests the same thing:
“better to be overprepared than underprepared”. 😉

Here is a very practical guide, as if we were chatting in the kitchen at Casa Angiz before heading out,
so you know what to pack in your backpack depending on the time of year and don’t get any surprises.

🌸 Spring in Irati: mud, intense green, and layers

In spring the forest is beautiful, but the ground is usually damp and the weather changes quite quickly.
We usually recommend:

  • 🥾 Waterproof footwear (boots or trekking shoes with good soles).
  • 🧥 Outer layer like a rain jacket or a light windbreaker.
  • 🧦 Spare socks in case you step in more mud than expected.
  • 👕 Layered clothing: breathable T-shirt + thin fleece.
  • 💧 Enough water (minimum 1 liter per person).
  • 🧴 A bit of sunscreen and a cap if the sun comes out.

Many people arrive thinking that “spring = warm weather” and then tell us they
felt chilly in the shaded areas. Better to bring one extra layer. 🌿

☀️ Summer in Irati: don’t rely only on the heat

Even in summer, it never hurts to bring something warm to Irati Forest. We often tell guests:
“in Irati, even in August, a jacket is never too much”. 😄

  • 🥾 Comfortable closed shoes (trekking shoes are better than city sneakers).
  • 👒 Cap or hat and sunglasses.
  • 🧴 Sunscreen (face, neck, and arms, especially if you do more open routes).
  • 💧 1.5 liters of water per person if you will be out for several hours.
  • 🍎 Some snacks: nuts, fruit, energy bars.
  • 🧥 Light warm layer for higher areas or if it clouds over.

In summer, what we see most is people coming “for a walk” without enough water or with very basic footwear.
To really enjoy Irati, your feet and hydration are key. 💧👣

🍁 Autumn in Irati: magic colors… and slippery ground

Autumn is the star season in Irati: spectacular colors, fairy-tale atmosphere… and also
damp leaves and mud. This is where we insist most on the importance of footwear:

  • 🥾 Mountain boots with good non-slip soles (highly recommended).
  • 🧥 Waterproof jacket or proper raincoat, not just an umbrella.
  • 🧣 Neck gaiter or light scarf for the chill.
  • 🧤 Thin gloves if you feel the cold easily.
  • 🚶‍♂️ Hiking poles (they help a lot on slippery sections).
  • 🧴 Small backpack to carry layers you take off or put on.

Something we repeat a lot is: “in autumn, the ground can fool you”. Leaves hide roots, stones, and mud.
With good footwear and poles, you’ll have a safe and much more comfortable walk. 🍂

❄️ Winter in Irati: cold, snow, and short days

In winter, Irati Forest may be snowy or icy, and the days are shorter.
If you go at this time of year, we recommend taking it calmly and preparing well:

  • 🥾 Waterproof mountain boots with good soles for snow/ice.
  • 🧤 Gloves, hat, and thermal clothing (T-shirt and leggings if it is very cold).
  • 🧥 Thick jacket and waterproof layer if precipitation is expected.
  • 🧦 Spare socks in case they get wet.
  • 🔦 Headlamp or flashlight if you plan to stay out longer (it gets dark early).
  • 🍫 Some energy food to warm up and regain strength.

In winter we usually insist that it is better not to use up all the daylight. We always recommend
leaving early and returning with time to spare so you don’t have to walk through the forest at night. 🌙

💡 General tips we always repeat at Casa Angiz

  • 📱 Bring your phone with a charged battery (and if possible, an offline map or downloaded track).
  • 🗺️ Check the route before leaving (distance and elevation gain) so you don’t underestimate it.
  • ⏱️ Calculate the return time to Casa Angiz with a margin, especially in autumn and winter.
  • 🚯 Always respect the environment: don’t leave trash, don’t leave marked trails, and take care of the forest.

If when you arrive at Casa Angiz you have doubts about which route to choose or what to bring depending on the day
and the weather forecast, we will be happy to help you. We can recommend
routes adapted to your level and tell you exactly what is essential to carry in your backpack
depending on the season. 🌲💚

⚠️ Common mistakes when visiting Irati Forest (and how to avoid them)

Every week we welcome guests at Casa Angiz who are going to the
Irati Forest for the first time. They all come back delighted, but many admit to making
the same mistakes. So you can enjoy it to the fullest without setbacks, here is
an honest, real guide based on our experience with travelers. 🌿

❌ 1. Underestimating the real time of the routes

On maps everything looks very quick… but Irati is mountainous, there are elevation changes, damp areas
and trails where people stop to take photos.
This happens a lot: someone tells us “we’ll be back at 1:00 p.m.” and they arrive at 3:30 p.m. 😅.

✔️ How to avoid it:
Always calculate 30–40% more time than the route indicates.
If a route says 2 hours, think 3. If it says 4 hours, think 5.
Irati is for enjoying without rushing. 🍃

❌ 2. Going without proper footwear

This is the number one mistake. City sneakers, smooth athletic shoes, or even sandals…
And of course, then comes the humidity, the mud, the slippery leaves… and you have to turn back.

✔️ Solution:
Trekking boots or shoes with a marked sole.
Even in summer, that is the best option. 🥾

❌ 3. Not bringing enough water

Many people think that because it is a cool forest, it won’t be necessary.
But on 2–3 hour routes, the body still gets dehydrated.

✔️ Recommendation:
At least 1 liter per person on short routes, and 1.5 L if you will be out half a day. 💧

❌ 4. Relying exclusively on the phone’s GPS

In Irati there are areas without coverage and others where the map freezes.
More than once we have had guests who ended up walking 2 extra km because they took the wrong turn.

✔️ Avoid it like this:
• Download the track on your phone before leaving 📲
• Bring an offline map or screenshot
• Pay attention to the green and white signage

❌ 5. Going to Irati Forest too late

The routes are not dangerous, but they are long and very shady.
In autumn and winter, daylight disappears much earlier than it seems.

✔️ Casa Angiz tip:
Leave the house before 10:00 if you want to make the most of the day and return calmly. ☀️

❌ 6. Not checking the weather before leaving

In Irati it is quite typical: sun in the village, fog in the forest, rain on the summit.
If you go without a rain jacket, you can end up soaked in 3 minutes.

✔️ What to do:
Check the forecast for specific areas (Ochagavía, Orbaizeta, or Larrau).
And always bring a waterproof layer. ☔

❌ 7. Not booking if you go in peak season

Especially in autumn 🍁, Irati Forest receives a huge number of visitors.
This means full parking lots and, at some access points, even queues to get in.

✔️ Recommendation:
Go early or choose less crowded access points such as Arrazola or Pikatua.

❌ 8. Trying to do “all of Irati” in one day

Irati is huge, with different access points and very varied routes.
Trying to see everything in 6 hours is impossible and only leads to frustration.

✔️ The key:
Choose one area per day:
• Irabia Reservoir
• Arrazola and San Esteban
• Arpea Cave
• Pikatua and Abodi
• Route of the Senses

❌ 9. Not bringing food

On many routes there are no bars, tables, or designated areas, so it is easy to run out of energy.

✔️ Personal tip:
Bring a small picnic: fruit, nuts, sandwich… 🥪
It tastes three times better in the middle of nature!

❌ 10. Going without a plan B

Sometimes it rains a lot, or access is closed, or the fog makes it impossible to enjoy the route.
More than once we have helped guests improvise an alternative plan.

✔️ That is why we always recommend:
Keep in mind a nearby alternative route such as:
Larrún,
Urdax Caves,
Elizondo or
Amaiur.

With these small tips you’ll enjoy Irati like a true local.
And if you have doubts, at Casa Angiz we’ll be happy to help you choose the best route
according to your level, the weather, and the time of year. 🌲💚

🚴‍♂️ Discover Irati Forest by bicycle

In addition to the classic hiking trails, Irati Forest and its surroundings offer several options for those who
prefer to explore the forest on two wheels. There are forest tracks and marked routes for
mountain bikes and electric bikes, ideal for covering more distance without losing contact with nature.

In places like Casas de Irati or the Irati-Abodi mountain center you can find
specific information about bike itineraries, as well as rental and minor repair services
in season. This allows the experience to be adapted to each person’s level: from gentle rides on tracks to longer routes
for experienced cyclists.

  • Family routes: wide tracks, little elevation gain, and comfortable sections for beginners.
  • MTB routes: combining tracks and trails, with more demanding climbs and descents.
  • E-bike option: perfect for enjoying elevation changes without getting exhausted and focusing on the scenery.

A good idea is to combine one day of classic hiking with another day by bike, to see Irati
from different viewpoints. From Casa Angiz you can organize both options and choose
the one that best suits your fitness and the weather each day.

Casas de Irati or Arrazola.

My experience walking through Irati Forest.

Irati Forest conveys a peace that few places achieve. The deep silence, interrupted only by the whisper of the wind and the water, makes one feel small in front of the grandeur of the forest. It is a place to walk, breathe, and let yourself be carried away by the magic of nature.

Personal tip for your visit to Irati Forest

When I visited Irati Forest, I learned that the best way to enjoy it is not by rushing from one viewpoint to another, but by deliberately getting lost among its trails. I recommend walking slowly, breathing deeply, and observing the small details: the texture of the fir bark, the reflection of the water in the reservoir, or the crunch of the leaves under your feet.

Bringing a notebook, a camera, or simply letting your senses absorb the surroundings makes every walk a unique moment. My advice: turn off your phone, disconnect, and let the forest speak to you at its own pace. That is the true magic of Irati.
