What to do for a weekend in the Baztán Valley: our family getaway
There are destinations that have been on the to-do list for a long time. The Baztán Valley was one of them. We had had it marked for years, that kind of place everyone talks about with shining eyes. And when we finally got there with the kids, we understood exactly why.
Green. Everything is green. A green so intense, so damp, so alive that it seems unreal. Stone villages that look like they came out of a fairy tale, rivers singing among the trees, and a cuisine that makes you forget you ever ate anywhere else. The Baztán Valley with family is one of those trips that leave a mark.
In this article we tell you what to do in the Baztán Valley over a weekend: our real route, with the places we liked most, the tips nobody tells you, the tickets you need to book in advance and, above all, what the kids enjoyed. Because yes, Baztán is perfect for going with little ones.

Santesteban, one of the most charming villages near our base in Sumbilla 🌿
Where the Baztán Valley is and how to get there
The Baztán Valley is in northern Navarre, right in the Pyrenees, just 54 km from Pamplona and 64 km from San Sebastián. It borders France and is where the Bidasoa River is born. It is made up of 15 towns surrounded by mountains, forests and meadows, which have earned it the nickname “the Navarrese Switzerland”.
What we didn’t expect was that more Basque is spoken here than in many parts of the Basque Country. Baztán is part of Euskal Herria, and you can feel it in every corner: in the street names, in the signs, in the way neighbors greet each other.
🚗 By car from the main cities:
From Pamplona: approx. 55 min via NA-121-B
From San Sebastián: approx. 1 h via A-15
From Bilbao: approx. 1 h 30 min
From Madrid: approx. 4 h 30 min (we recommend staying overnight halfway)
🅿️ Tip: In high season and on long weekends, some parking areas (Xorroxin Waterfall, Amaiur) require a free advance reservation. Don’t leave it until the last minute!
Our base: Casa Angiz in Sumbilla
When we travel as a family, accommodation is everything. It’s not just the place where you sleep: it’s the point from which you organize everything, where the kids really rest and where adults can unwind calmly. That’s why we chose Casa Angiz, in Sumbilla, and it was one of the best decisions of the trip.
Sumbilla is in a strategic spot: just minutes from the main villages in the valley and in an absolutely spectacular natural setting. From Casa Angiz you can walk to mountain trails, and you’re a stone’s throw from Elizondo, Xorroxin Waterfall, the Elgorriaga spa and the most beautiful villages in Baztán.
🏡 Why did we love Casa Angiz?
The apartments are built with noble materials: wood, stone, lots of care. They have a fireplace, jacuzzi, terraces with valley views and everything needed to keep the kids comfortable. It’s pet friendly, sustainable and has an unbeatable location for exploring Baztán-Bidasoa.
In addition, guests at Casa Angiz have access to exclusive discounts at the Elgorriaga Spa, something we took advantage of on the second day. More on that later 😊
Want to stay in the heart of the Baztán Valley with the whole family?
What to expect from a weekend in the Baztán Valley with kids
Before getting into the route in detail, we want to give you a realistic idea of what you’ll find. Baztán is not a theme park or a mass-tourism destination. It’s an authentic, peaceful valley with a very distinctive personality. And that, with kids, is a gift.
The landscapes are constantly impressive. The villages are small and safe to walk around. The food has things kids will love (the chistorra talos, for example, are a total hit). And there are activities for all tastes: gentle hiking, caves with witch legends, botanical gardens, waterfalls…

Book parking for Xorroxin Waterfall and Amaiur in advance (it’s free), buy Zugarramurdi Cave tickets online and, if you want to visit Amaiur Mill, call several days ahead. We arrived without booking and got no spot at all. Learn from our mistakes! 😅
In the next section we tell you about Day 1 in the morning: how we fell in love with Elizondo and why Amaiur with kids is an experience that’s priceless. Keep reading!
Saturday morning: the villages that stole our hearts
We left Casa Angiz after breakfast ready to take on the world, or rather the valley. The plan for the morning was simple on paper: two villages, two stops. What we didn’t know was that each one would surprise us in a completely different way.
We planned Saturday morning with the kids in mind: places with history you can tell stories about, spaces where they can move freely and, if possible, something tasty to eat. The Baztán Valley delivered. With honors, in fact.
Elizondo — The valley capital you don’t expect
When you enter Elizondo for the first time, the first thing you think is: how is it possible that this place isn’t in every travel magazine? Manor houses of three and four stories with wooden balconies full of flowers, stone façades that tell centuries of history, and a river —the Baztan— crossing the village as if it were part of the set.
Elizondo is the capital of the Baztán Valley and, by far, the largest village in the area. It is also the best known thanks to the Baztán Trilogy, Dolores Redondo’s crime novel series that turned this corner of Navarre into the setting for bestsellers and later films.

Elizondo’s popular festivals fill the streets with color, music and joy 🎉
What to see in Elizondo with kids: our must-stops
Jaime Urrutia Street is the village’s main artery and the most photogenic. Palatial houses, noble coats of arms, windows full of flowers… you could spend hours just looking at the façades. It connects with Braulio Urrutia Street for a more complete walk.
The Txokoto bridge is another must-stop. The kids loved leaning over the river dam and watching the water rush down. If you’ve seen the trilogy film, look for the Baztanesa Bakery with the Mantecadas Salazar sign. At the Tourist Office you can ask for a free map with all the filming locations.
🧒 What did the kids love in Elizondo?
The river and the dam at Txokoto bridge were a total success. They also loved the story about the movie’s mantecadas. And the ice cream on one of the terraces on the main street was the perfect finishing touch. Sometimes the simplest things are what they enjoy most.
| 📍 Where it is | Capital of the Baztán Valley, Navarre |
| 🚗 From Sumbilla | Approx. 20 min |
| ⏱️ Recommended time | 2-3 hours |
| 🎟️ Price | Free walk · Tourist Office: free entry |
| 👶 Suitable for | All ages, strollers no problem |
🌿 Elizondo and Baztan cuisine: If you want to make the most of the morning by trying local food, don’t miss the bars and restaurants in the center. Artisan sheep cheese, curd with honey and assorted pintxos are just the beginning. We have a full article on Baztán Valley cuisine where we tell you all the dishes and products you shouldn’t leave without trying.
Amaiur — History, views and the best talos in the valley
If Elizondo surprised us with its noble elegance, Amaiur left us speechless for something completely different: its character. It’s a small, almost intimate village, but with a huge historical personality. And with the kids it was, without a doubt, the morning stop we enjoyed most.
The porticoed arch and Amaiur Castle: history you can touch
To enter the old town you have to cross a porticoed stone arch that welcomes you into the village. It’s one of those images that stays with you. Up top are the ruins of the old Amaiur Castle, the scene of Navarre’s last resistance against Castilian troops. The views from above are absolutely spectacular: the valley opens at your feet like a green map.
🧒 The castle through the children’s eyes
For them it was like being in an adventure video game. We told them the story of the battle (adapted to their age), they explored the ruins with great enthusiasm and from the top they spent a good while identifying villages in the valley. One of those activities that entertains and teaches at the same time. 🏆
Amaiur Mill and talos: the perfect snack for little ones
The Amaiur Mill has been producing corn flour since the 18th century and is still in operation. Book the guided visit in advance; we tried to sign up when we arrived and it was fully booked for that day and the next 😅.
But the best thing, with or without a reservation, is the talos: corn-flour tortillas filled with chistorra, bacon, cheese or chocolate. The traditional Baztán dish that wins over the whole family.
🌽 The talos at Amaiur Mill — What we ordered:
Filled with chistorra, bacon, cheese and chocolate. The chocolate one was the kids’ favorite, no debate. We ordered three talos and a bottle of water: €21.50 total. Warning: they are very filling. If you’re not very hungry, order to share.
| 📍 Where it is | North of the Baztán Valley, near the French border |
| 🚗 From Elizondo | Approx. 20 min |
| ⏱️ Recommended time | 2 hours (without guided mill visit) |
| 🅿️ Parking | Free reservation required in high season |
| 🌽 Talos | Approx. €6-7 each · Very filling! |
⚠️ Important tip: If you visit Amaiur in summer or on long weekends, parking reservation is mandatory and free. It’s done on the same website as Xorroxin Waterfall. The parking ticket also includes a free entry to the village’s archaeological museum.
Our morning rating: 10 out of 10
Between Elizondo and Amaiur we had used up all our morning energy. Two hours in each village, calmly, without rushing, stopping to look, to take photos, to listen to what the kids told us about each corner. That’s how you travel well as a family.
🔗 Want to go deeper into the valley’s cuisine? In our article about Baztán Valley cuisine you’ll find all the typical dishes, local products and where to eat the best talos, cheeses and meats in the area.
After so much walking, it was time to recharge and get ready for the afternoon. Because the Bertiz Historic Garden and the Zugarramurdi Caves were waiting. And that’s what we tell you about in the next section. 🌲🧙♀️
Saturday afternoon: nature, magic and witches in the Baztán Valley
After the morning in Elizondo and Amaiur, it was time to refuel with a good lunch and get ready for an afternoon that promised a lot. And it delivered. The plan was to visit two places that, at first glance, have nothing to do with each other: a centuries-old botanical garden surrounded by forest and a cave with witch legends that has fascinated travelers for centuries. With kids, both were an absolute success, though for completely different reasons.
Bertiz Historic Garden — Navarre’s enchanted forest
There are places that change your pace as soon as you enter. The Bertiz Historic Garden is one of them. From the first step inside, the temperature drops a couple of degrees, the smell of damp earth and moss surrounds you, and the kids, who had pretty much run out of energy in the morning, suddenly switched back on as if someone had pressed the reset button.
The garden is part of the Natural Park of the Señorío de Bertiz, one of Navarre’s most important forest areas with more than 2,000 hectares of beech, oak and alder woods. The park is free to enter, but the historic garden has an admission fee and is worth every euro.
What to see in Bertiz Garden: what surprised us most
The garden’s tree collection is absolutely extraordinary. You’ll find specimens from all over the world living alongside native Navarre flora: giant sequoias, century-old cedars, ginkgo biloba, lemon trees, camellias, azaleas, hydrangeas, wisteria and tall bamboo. In addition to the trees, there are ponds, bridges, viewpoints and Art Nouveau-style gazebos that make every bend in the path a new photo surprise.
There is also a Nature Interpretation Center where children can learn about the Navarre forest ecosystem in a very visual and entertaining way.
🧒 What the kids enjoyed most at Bertiz
The ponds with fish and the giant sequoias were the stars of the day. Trying to hug a sequoia trunk as a whole family became the afternoon game. The Interpretation Center kept them entertained for a good while too. And the walk along the trails, at their own pace and without rushing, was one of the most pleasant parts of the trip. 🌲
🥾 Got more time? If you’re still craving more nature, the Natural Park of the Señorío de Bertiz has hiking routes of various levels. For those staying at Casa Angiz, the Sumbilla area is also the perfect starting point for the climb to Mount Mendaur, one of the most spectacular peaks in northern Navarre.
| 📍 Where it is | Oieregi, on the banks of the Bidasoa River |
| 🚗 From Elizondo | Approx. 25 min |
| ⏱️ Visit duration | 1 hour (garden only) · Half day (with hiking) |
| 🎟️ Garden entry | €3 adults — Children: FREE ✓ |
| ♿ Accessibility | Main paths are stroller-friendly |
⚠️ Important about parking: The parking lot next to the garden has limited capacity. In high season we recommend arriving before 10:30 a.m. Otherwise there are alternative areas a few minutes’ walk away.
Zugarramurdi Cave — Where Navarre’s witches come to life
Half an hour from Elizondo, right next to the French border, is one of the most unique places in all of northern Spain: Zugarramurdi Cave. A name that’s hard to pronounce the first time but impossible to forget.
The cave became very famous thanks to Álex de la Iglesia’s film, but its real history is much older and even more fascinating: we’re talking about one of the biggest witchcraft trials in Spanish history.
The story the kids won’t forget: the coven and the Inquisition
In 1610, the Inquisition Tribunal investigated 40 women from Zugarramurdi, accused of practicing witchcraft and holding covens in this cave. Eleven of them were sentenced to die at the stake. A dark and real story that, told tactfully, sparks huge curiosity in children.
The visit inside: what to expect
Zugarramurdi cave is actually a large natural rock arch through which the Infernuko Erreka stream flows —the stream of hell in Basque—. The main gallery is spacious, perfectly lit and signposted. The full route takes between 45 and 60 minutes, very manageable with children: there are no dangerous sections or total darkness.
| 🎟️ Ticket type | Price |
| Adults | €6 |
| Children | €4 |
| Cave + Witch Museum | Recommended combined price |
🧒 The cave through the children’s eyes: a total success
Relative fear, total fascination. The stream running along the cave floor seemed amazing to them. The most repeated question: “Did witches really dance here?” According to legend, yes. And that was enough for them to keep talking about it for the rest of the day. 🧙♀️🔥
The Witch Museum: don’t miss it
Right next to the cave is the Zugarramurdi Witch Museum, which complements the visit excellently. We couldn’t go in because it was fully booked for that day. Moral of the story: buy tickets online in advance, especially in high season and on long weekends.
| 📍 Where it is | Zugarramurdi, Navarre (French border) |
| 🚗 From Elizondo | Approx. 30 min |
| ⏱️ Visit duration | 45-60 min (cave only) |
| 📅 Online booking | Highly recommended in high season |
| 👶 Minimum age | Suitable for all ages |
💡 Combo tip: If you go to Zugarramurdi, take the opportunity to visit Urdazubi/Urdax, just 5 minutes away. There you’ll find Paleolithic caves with stalactites, the 11th-century Monastery of San Salvador and one of the oldest mills in the area. A stop of less than an hour that completes the day perfectly.
How our Saturday ended: tired and delighted
When we got back to Casa Angiz that night, the kids were already asleep in the car. No better sign possible. We had toured two historic villages in the morning and spent an afternoon among centuries-old trees and witch legends. The valley gave us exactly what we were looking for: real experiences, without gimmicks, that the whole family enjoyed from start to finish.
Sunday promised to be just as intense. Xorroxin Waterfall and the Elgorriaga Spa were still to come. We tell you about them in the next section. 💧♨️
🏡 Still don’t have accommodation for your Baztán getaway? Guests at Casa Angiz in Sumbilla have access to exclusive discounts at the Elgorriaga Spa and a perfect location to reach all the places in this section in just a few minutes. 🌿
Sunday morning: Xorroxin Waterfall left us speechless
If Saturday had been intense, Sunday started with a completely different energy. Calmer, more natural, more boots-and-backpack. The plan was clear from the night before: get up early, arrive in Erratzu early and hike to Xorroxin Waterfall before the crowds arrived.
It was one of the best decisions of the trip. And one of the most beautiful family experiences we’ve had in a long time.

Xorroxin Waterfall: one of the most spectacular corners of the Baztán Valley 💧
Xorroxin Waterfall — The jewel of family hiking in Baztán
The Xorroxin Waterfall is, without a doubt, one of the great natural attractions of the Baztán Valley. An impressive waterfall hidden among beech and chestnut trees that can only be reached on foot, which already gives it that sense of adventure kids love.
The route starts in the village of Erratzu, specifically near the parking area on Ubidea Street. From there the trail goes through the forest in a relatively easy walk with some elevation gain. The ground can be muddy depending on the season, so proper footwear is essential.
Step by step: what to expect with kids
The trail runs entirely through beech and chestnut woods, with an Atlantic forest atmosphere that becomes absolutely magical in autumn. The path is well marked and has no technical difficulties, although you need to watch out for mud on rainy days or after them, which are many in northern Navarre.
Between the outward walk, the return and the time we spent taking photos and letting the kids explore the area around the waterfall, the full route took us almost three hours. A perfect amount of time for a relaxed Sunday morning.
🧒 The waterfall through the children’s eyes
The silence when they saw it for the first time was the best possible reaction. Then came the questions: where does all that water come from? Are there fish in there? Can we touch it? And the puddles on the way back, which they made the most of with rain boots. The perfect morning. 🌊
Parking: the detail that can ruin your morning
Here’s the most important tip in this whole section: in high season, parking in Erratzu must be booked in advance. The reservation is free and done online, but spaces sell out quickly, especially on long weekends and summer weekends.
We tried to book the day before and there were no spaces left. We decided to go anyway first thing in the morning and managed to park without problems, because the first time slots hadn’t arrived yet. The key: arrive before 9 a.m. in high season.
🅿️ How to handle Xorroxin parking:
✔ Try to reserve a spot online several days in advance (it’s free)
✔ If no spaces are available, arrive before 9 a.m. — there are usually free spots
✔ Do the route first thing in the morning: the outward walk will be almost alone
✔ In low season there’s no parking problem
| 📍 Trail start | Ubidea Street parking, Erratzu |
| 🚗 From Sumbilla | Approx. 25 min |
| ⏱️ Total duration | 2.5 – 3 hours (out + back + stops) |
| 💪 Difficulty | Low-Medium · Suitable for children with proper footwear |
| 🎟️ Price | Free ✓ |
| 👟 Recommended footwear | Hiking boots or rain boots for children |
⚠️ Important warning: The path has sections with significant mud, especially after rainy days. Light sneakers are not enough. With small children, rain boots are the best option because they will inevitably go for the puddles 😄
More hiking in the area: Mount Mendaur from Sumbilla
If the Xorroxin route leaves you wanting more or you want an alternative for the more hiking-minded members of the family, from Casa Angiz in Sumbilla you have one of the most rewarding climbs in northern Navarre close at hand: Mount Mendaur, at 1,131 meters above sea level and with breathtaking panoramic views of the Pyrenees.
⛰️ Mount Mendaur from Sumbilla: One of the most highly rated hiking routes in the area. From the summit you can see the Navarre valleys, the Pyrenees and, on clear days, even the Cantabrian Sea. The classic route starts from Sunbilla and combines oak and beech forests with stretches of open meadow.
🔗 We’ve left all the detailed information in our full article: Mount Mendaur: routes, hiking and authentic nature →
After the morning at Xorroxin, we went back to Casa Angiz for lunch and to recharge. Because Sunday afternoon held what was perhaps the best surprise of the trip: the Elgorriaga Spa. A reward for the parents after all that walking. And for the kids too, of course. ♨️
Sunday afternoon: Elgorriaga Spa, the reward we all deserved
After three hours of hiking in the morning, Sunday afternoon needed to be a different kind of plan. Calmer. More restorative. And that’s where Elgorriaga Spa comes in, one of those finds that turn a good trip into an unforgettable one.
We discovered it thanks to the people at Casa Angiz, who told us that guests have access to an exclusive discount on the thermal circuit. And that was enough to convince us. What we found exceeded all expectations.
Elgorriaga Spa — The saltiest waters in Europe in the Baztán Valley
The Elgorriaga Spa is located in the quiet village of Elgorriaga, within the Malerreka Valley, just minutes from the Baztán Valley. Its great secret is its mineral-medicinal thermal waters, considered among the saltiest in Europe, with relaxing, anti-inflammatory properties that are beneficial for muscles and joints.
The feeling of floating in those waters after two days on the road is simply indescribable. The body relaxes in a way that’s hard to believe until you experience it. And the setting —mountains, forest, silence— does the rest.
What the thermal circuit includes and how long it lasts
The thermal circuit lasts approximately 70 minutes and includes pools at different temperatures, hydromassage jets, relaxation areas and rest spaces. A complete wellness experience that pairs perfectly with the active, nature-based tourism that Baztán offers.
Is Elgorriaga Spa suitable for children?
👨👩👧 Access conditions for families with children:

What to eat in the Baztán Valley: flavors the whole family will remember
The Baztán Valley is not just landscapes and charming villages. It’s also one of those destinations where food becomes part of the travel experience in a way few places manage. There is no tourist cuisine here: there is true local produce, centuries-old recipes passed from farmhouse to farmhouse and a food culture you can feel at every counter, every market, every mill.
And the best part: it works perfectly with kids. Because Baztán cuisine has hearty dishes, direct flavors and that artisanal traditional touch that appeals to all ages. Here’s what you shouldn’t miss.
The dishes and products you must try before you leave
Talos — Baztán’s star bite
We already told you about talos at Amaiur Mill, but they deserve their own section because they are, by far, the dish you’ll repeat most in Baztán. Corn-flour tortillas filled with chistorra, bacon, cheese or chocolate: simple, hearty and absolutely addictive.
You’ll find them in several places in the valley, but the ones at Amaiur Mill are the most authentic: made with flour ground in the very 18th-century mill that still operates today. A gastronomic and cultural experience at the same time.
🧒 The kids’ verdict
The chocolate talo won by a landslide. The chistorra one was the adults’ favorite. Since that day, at home they’ve been asking for weeks that we recreate the recipe. Spoiler: there’s no way it comes out the same. 😄
Artisan sheep cheese — The treasure of Baztán farmhouses
Artisan sheep cheese is one of the valley’s great gastronomic prides. Made in small farmhouses with Latxa sheep’s milk, it has an intense, slightly smoky flavor and a texture that varies depending on aging time. You’ll find it in markets, local product shops and on the menus of most restaurants in the area.
The Idiazabal is the best known, but in Baztán you’ll find local varieties that aren’t sold outside the valley. If you see a direct-sale sign at a farmhouse, stop. It’s worth it.
💡 Perfect pairing: Sheep cheese + artisan heather honey from Baztán. A simple combination you’ll find on many local restaurant cheese boards and that becomes one of those food experiences you won’t forget.
Bidasoa trout Navarre-style — The classic that never fails
The Bidasoa River is born precisely in the Baztán Valley and its trout are famous throughout Navarre. Fresh, juicy and prepared with care: Navarre-style (stuffed with serrano ham and fried in olive oil) is the most typical preparation and also the most spectacular for children, who are usually not big fish fans but change their minds with this recipe.
You’ll also find it baked with vegetables or simply fried with garlic and parsley. In any version, if it’s on the menu, order it.
Pyrenean beef — The grill that changes everything
The Pyrenean cow grazes freely in the Navarre Pyrenees meadows and you can taste it in the meat: deep red, marbled with fat, with a flavor few meats in the world can match. In Baztán’s grill houses they cook it over charcoal with coarse salt and nothing else, because it needs nothing else.
If you’re going to allow yourself just one restaurant meal over the weekend, make it at a grill house with a Pyrenean beef steak. An experience that justifies the trip on its own.
Baztán sweets: the kids’ favorite section
Baztán pastries have a very distinctive personality, with recipes dating back centuries and still made with the same ingredients as always. These are the three you can’t miss:
| 🧁 Sweet | What is it? | When to find it? |
| Txantxigorri cakes | Sweet with pork lard, crunchy and very tasty | Festivals, fairs and local bakeries |
| Intxaursalsa | Traditional walnut cream, dense and very aromatic | Especially at Christmas |
| Goxua | Dessert of cream, custard and sponge cake: the kids’ favorite | All year round in restaurants and bakeries |
🥛 Don’t forget the curd (Gatzatua): A traditional dessert made with sheep’s milk, with a smooth texture and delicate flavor. It’s served in many restaurants with valley honey. With kids it’s a sure hit: creamy, mild and without overly strong flavors. The homemade farmhouse version is the best you’ll ever taste.

Practical tips for visiting the Baztán Valley as a family
After two intense days exploring Baztán with kids, we returned to Casa Angiz with a backpack full of memories and our heads full of lessons. Some we learned the hard way (Xorroxin parking without a reservation, Amaiur Mill fully booked, the witch museum closed…). So you don’t make the same mistakes, here are the tips we wish we’d had before leaving.
When to go: the best time to visit Baztán with kids
| 🗓️ Season | What to expect? | Family rating |

🩱 Swimsuit, cap and flip-flops — For Elgorriaga Spa (mandatory)
📱 Offline map app downloaded — Coverage in some parts of the valley is limited
💧 Reusable water bottle — For hiking routes
📸 Camera or phone with a good battery — You’ll need it at every bend in the road
Reservations to arrange before leaving home
📅 Pre-trip booking checklist:
✅ Accommodation at Casa Angiz — Book in advance, especially on long weekends and in summer → angiz.es/reservas

Frequently asked questions about the Baztán Valley with kids
These are the questions we get asked most when we say we’ve traveled to Baztán with kids. We answer them with the honesty of someone who’s been there.
❓ Is the Baztán Valley suitable for small children, even babies?
Yes, in general Baztán is very suitable for families with children of all ages. The villages are small, quiet and safe to walk around. Bertiz Garden has stroller-friendly paths. Xorroxin Waterfall requires boots and some care with mud, so it can be more difficult with babies in arms. Zugarramurdi Cave has no age restrictions. Elgorriaga Spa does not admit children under 3.
❓ How many days are enough to visit the Baztán Valley?
With 2 nights and 2 full days you can see the most important things: Elizondo, Amaiur, Xorroxin Waterfall, Bertiz Garden and Zugarramurdi Cave. If you add Elgorriaga Spa (highly recommended), you’ll need to organize your time well. With 3 nights you’ll have a much more relaxed pace and can add villages like Urdazubi, Arizkun or even cross into France to visit Ainhoa or Espelette.
❓ Is a car necessary to get around Baztán?
Yes, a car is practically essential. The villages in the valley are connected by road, but public transport is very limited and doesn’t reach many of the points of interest such as Xorroxin Waterfall or Bertiz Garden. With a car, mobility is total and the times between stops are very reasonable: no trip between the places in this article takes more than 35 minutes.
❓ How much does a family weekend in the Baztán Valley cost?
Baztán can be a very affordable destination if you organize the visits well. The main activities are free (villages, Amaiur castle, forest walks). The main cost comes from accommodation, food (which is worth not skimping on) and a few specific tickets: Bertiz Garden (€3 adults, kids free), Zugarramurdi Cave (€6 adults, €4 children) and Elgorriaga Spa (from €16 children, from €28 adults with Casa Angiz discount).
❓ What’s the difference between staying in Elizondo or in Sumbilla?
Elizondo is the valley capital, more central for the villages in the interior of Baztán and with more restaurants and shops. Sumbilla, where Casa Angiz is located, is a bit further south but offers a perfect position to cover both Baztán and the Bidasoa Valley and the Malerreka area where Elgorriaga Spa is located. In addition, from Sumbilla you have Mount Mendaur literally at your doorstep. For an active, nature-focused getaway, Sumbilla wins.
❓ Can you visit Baztán if it rains?
Absolutely yes! In fact, Baztán in the rain has a special atmosphere: the green intensifies, the waterfall carries more water and the villages have a winter fairy-tale feel. Pack waterproof clothing and rain boots for the kids and take advantage of rainy days to visit the caves, museums or the spa. Save sunny days for the trails and viewpoints.
Ready to live your own adventure in the Baztán Valley?
When the car left the valley and we started leaving the green mountains behind, the kids looked out the window in silence. That, on a family trip, is the greatest success. It means they’ve experienced something real, something that moved them inside. The Baztán Valley does that to people.
It’s not a destination of attractions or theme parks. It’s a destination of honest nature, villages with soul, real food and a Basque and Navarrese culture you can breathe in every corner. With kids, that’s exactly what we look for: that they live the world, not consume it.
If this article has given you the push you needed, we’re very happy. And if you’re going to plan the trip, you already know: Casa Angiz in Sumbilla is waiting for you with the apartments ready, the spa 15 minutes away and Mount Mendaur at the door. 🌿
