History and essence of Santesteban (Doneztebe), a village with Navarrese character
Santesteban, or Doneztebe, is part of the Malerreka Valley in northern Navarre. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages, when the place was a strategic stopping point on the routes linking the coast with the interior. The Ezkurra River and its proximity to the Bidasoa shaped the life of the village, which grew protected by its church and by the manor houses of the most influential families.
Today, Santesteban preserves that rural essence, with a well-kept historic center, cobbled streets, and balconies decorated with flowers in spring and summer. Walking through its streets connects you with a past in which trade, agriculture, and livestock farming were the driving force of local life.
My first visit to Santesteban
The first time I arrived in Santesteban Navarre was on a summer day. The fresh air coming down from the mountains and the sound of the Ezkurra River welcomed me. I parked by the bridge and the first thing I did was cross it slowly, looking at the water and the old façades reflected in it. That image stayed with me as the perfect postcard of a charming Navarrese village.
Walking along Calle Mayor felt like traveling back in time: stone façades, wide doorways, and small shops that invite you in. One of the details that surprised me most was the tranquility: despite it being summer, there were no crowds and I was able to chat with locals who kindly told me what to see and where to eat.
The charm of everyday life
Beyond its monuments, what makes Doneztebe special is its daily life. Children playing in the square, older people chatting on benches, and the smell of freshly baked bread coming from the bakeries. Small scenes that convey the authentic spirit of rural tourism in Navarre.
If you’re planning a getaway to Santesteban, my advice is not to rush. Take time to walk, observe, and talk to people. That’s how you truly discover the essence of this corner of northern Navarre.
If you love the nature of Navarre, you can’t miss the Señorío de Bértiz Natural Park, a magical place full of forests and gardens that is well worth discovering.

As soon as I set foot in Santesteban, I felt I was in one of those rural villages in Navarre where time seems to move more slowly. What surprised me most was the number of stone-renovated houses, all with careful details and balconies full of flowers. The narrow streets invite you to get lost and discover photogenic corners at every turn. And if you’re looking for unique details, an original telephone booth is still preserved in the center of the village! (Don’t forget to take a photo of it; it’s a vintage souvenir you hardly see anywhere anymore).
Rustic architecture and streets with history
The architecture of Santesteban is one of its great treasures. Its renovated rural houses preserve the Basque-Navarrese essence, combining stone, wood, and gabled roofs. Strolling through the old town is like traveling to the past, among streets that smell of firewood and retain their medieval layout.
