There are destinations that have been on the to-do list for a long time. The Bazt\u00e1n Valley<\/strong> was one of them. We had had it marked for years, that kind of place everyone talks about with shining eyes. And when we finally got there with the kids, we understood exactly why.<\/p>

Green. Everything is green. A green so intense, so damp, so alive that it seems unreal. Stone villages that look like they came out of a fairy tale, rivers singing among the trees, and a cuisine that makes you forget you ever ate anywhere else. The Bazt\u00e1n Valley with family<\/strong> is one of those trips that leave a mark.<\/p>

In this article we tell you what to do in the Bazt\u00e1n Valley over a weekend<\/strong>: our real route, with the places we liked most, the tips nobody tells you, the tickets you need to book in advance and, above all, what the kids enjoyed. Because yes, Bazt\u00e1n is perfect for going with little ones.<\/p>

Where the Bazt\u00e1n Valley is and how to get there<\/p>

The Bazt\u00e1n Valley<\/strong> is in northern Navarre, right in the Pyrenees, just 54 km from Pamplona and 64 km from San Sebasti\u00e1n. It borders France and is where the Bidasoa River is born. It is made up of 15 towns<\/strong> surrounded by mountains, forests and meadows, which have earned it the nickname “the Navarrese Switzerland”<\/em>.<\/p>

What we didn\u2019t expect was that more Basque is spoken here than in many parts of the Basque Country. Bazt\u00e1n is part of Euskal Herria, and you can feel it in every corner: in the street names, in the signs, in the way neighbors greet each other.<\/p>

What to expect from a weekend in the Bazt\u00e1n Valley with kids<\/h3>

Before getting into the route in detail, we want to give you a realistic idea of what you\u2019ll find. Bazt\u00e1n is not a theme park or a mass-tourism destination. It\u2019s an authentic, peaceful valley with a very distinctive personality<\/strong>. And that, with kids, is a gift.<\/p>

The landscapes are constantly impressive. The villages are small and safe to walk around. The food has things kids will love (the chistorra talos, for example, are a total hit). And there are activities for all tastes: gentle hiking, caves with witch legends, botanical gardens, waterfalls\u2026<\/p>

Saturday morning: the villages that stole our hearts<\/h2>

We left Casa Angiz<\/strong> after breakfast ready to take on the world, or rather the valley. The plan for the morning was simple on paper: two villages, two stops. What we didn\u2019t know was that each one would surprise us in a completely different way.<\/p>

We planned Saturday morning with the kids in mind: places with history you can tell stories about, spaces where they can move freely and, if possible, something tasty to eat. The Bazt\u00e1n Valley delivered. With honors, in fact.<\/p>

Elizondo \u2014 The valley capital you don\u2019t expect<\/h3><\/div>

<\/p>

When you enter Elizondo<\/strong> for the first time, the first thing you think is: how is it possible that this place isn\u2019t in every travel magazine?<\/em> Manor houses of three and four stories with wooden balconies full of flowers, stone fa\u00e7ades that tell centuries of history, and a river \u2014the Baztan\u2014 crossing the village as if it were part of the set.<\/p>

Elizondo is the capital of the Bazt\u00e1n Valley<\/strong> and, by far, the largest village in the area. It is also the best known thanks to the Bazt\u00e1n Trilogy<\/em>, Dolores Redondo\u2019s crime novel series that turned this corner of Navarre into the setting for bestsellers and later films.<\/p>

What to see in Elizondo with kids: our must-stops<\/h4>

Jaime Urrutia Street<\/strong> is the village\u2019s main artery and the most photogenic. Palatial houses, noble coats of arms, windows full of flowers\u2026 you could spend hours just looking at the fa\u00e7ades. It connects with Braulio Urrutia Street<\/strong> for a more complete walk.<\/p>

The Txokoto bridge<\/strong> is another must-stop. The kids loved leaning over the river dam and watching the water rush down. If you\u2019ve seen the trilogy film, look for the Baztanesa Bakery<\/strong> with the Mantecadas Salazar<\/em> sign. At the Tourist Office<\/strong> you can ask for a free map with all the filming locations.<\/p>

The river and the dam at Txokoto bridge were a total success. They also loved the story about the movie\u2019s mantecadas. And the ice cream on one of the terraces on the main street was the perfect finishing touch. Sometimes the simplest things are what they enjoy most.<\/p><\/div>

Amaiur \u2014 History, views and the best talos in the valley<\/h3><\/div>

<\/p>

If Elizondo surprised us with its noble elegance, Amaiur<\/strong> left us speechless for something completely different: its character. It\u2019s a small, almost intimate village, but with a huge historical personality. And with the kids it was, without a doubt, the morning stop we enjoyed most<\/strong>.<\/p>

<\/p>

“Before we reached the village arch, we already knew Amaiur was going to be special. There\u2019s something in the atmosphere, in the stones, in the way the path climbs toward the castle, that prepares you for something beyond tourism.”<\/div>

The porticoed arch and Amaiur Castle: history you can touch<\/h4>

To enter the old town you have to cross a porticoed stone arch<\/strong> that welcomes you into the village. It\u2019s one of those images that stays with you. Up top are the ruins of the old Amaiur Castle<\/strong>, the scene of Navarre\u2019s last resistance against Castilian troops. The views from above are absolutely spectacular: the valley opens at your feet like a green map.<\/p>

For them it was like being in an adventure video game. We told them the story of the battle (adapted to their age), they explored the ruins with great enthusiasm and from the top they spent a good while identifying villages in the valley. One of those activities that entertains and teaches at the same time. \ud83c\udfc6<\/p><\/div>

Amaiur Mill and talos: the perfect snack for little ones<\/h4>

The Amaiur Mill<\/strong> has been producing corn flour since the 18th century and is still in operation. Book the guided visit in advance; we tried to sign up when we arrived and it was fully booked for that day and the next \ud83d\ude05.<\/p>

But the best thing, with or without a reservation, is the talos<\/strong>: corn-flour tortillas filled with chistorra, bacon, cheese or chocolate. The traditional Bazt\u00e1n dish that wins over the whole family.<\/p>

Between Elizondo and Amaiur we had used up all our morning energy. Two hours in each village, calmly, without rushing, stopping to look, to take photos, to listen to what the kids told us about each corner. That\u2019s how you travel well as a family.<\/p>

Saturday afternoon: nature, magic and witches in the Bazt\u00e1n Valley<\/h2>

After the morning in Elizondo and Amaiur, it was time to refuel with a good lunch and get ready for an afternoon that promised a lot. And it delivered. The plan was to visit two places that, at first glance, have nothing to do with each other: a centuries-old botanical garden<\/strong> surrounded by forest and a cave with witch legends<\/strong> that has fascinated travelers for centuries. With kids, both were an absolute success, though for completely different reasons.<\/p>

Bertiz Historic Garden \u2014 Navarre\u2019s enchanted forest<\/h3><\/div>

There are places that change your pace as soon as you enter. The Bertiz Historic Garden<\/strong> is one of them. From the first step inside, the temperature drops a couple of degrees, the smell of damp earth and moss surrounds you, and the kids, who had pretty much run out of energy in the morning, suddenly switched back on as if someone had pressed the reset button.<\/p>

The garden is part of the Natural Park of the Se\u00f1or\u00edo de Bertiz<\/strong>, one of Navarre\u2019s most important forest areas with more than 2,000 hectares of beech, oak and alder woods. The park is free to enter, but the historic garden has an admission fee and is worth every euro.<\/p>

“It\u2019s over a hundred years old and you can tell: every corner has been designed with an elegance that\u2019s rare today. Ponds with ducks, moss-covered stone bridges, Art Nouveau gazebos among trees from five continents… You could spend an entire afternoon here without noticing.”<\/div>

<\/p>

What to see in Bertiz Garden: what surprised us most<\/h4>

The garden\u2019s tree collection is absolutely extraordinary. You\u2019ll find specimens from all over the world living alongside native Navarre flora: giant sequoias, century-old cedars, ginkgo biloba, lemon trees, camellias, azaleas, hydrangeas, wisteria and tall bamboo<\/strong>. In addition to the trees, there are ponds, bridges, viewpoints and Art Nouveau-style gazebos<\/strong> that make every bend in the path a new photo surprise.<\/p>

There is also a Nature Interpretation Center<\/strong> where children can learn about the Navarre forest ecosystem in a very visual and entertaining way.<\/p>

\ud83e\uddd2 What the kids enjoyed most at Bertiz<\/p>

The ponds with fish and the giant sequoias were the stars of the day. Trying to hug a sequoia trunk as a whole family became the afternoon game. The Interpretation Center kept them entertained for a good while too. And the walk along the trails, at their own pace and without rushing, was one of the most pleasant parts of the trip. \ud83c\udf32<\/p><\/div>

For those staying at Casa Angiz, the Sumbilla area is also the perfect starting point for the climb to Mount Mendaur<\/a>, one of the most spectacular peaks in northern Navarre.<\/p><\/div>

\ud83e\uddd9\u200d\u2640\ufe0f<\/span>

Zugarramurdi Cave \u2014 Where Navarre\u2019s witches come to life<\/h3><\/div>

Half an hour from Elizondo, right next to the French border, is one of the most unique places in all of northern Spain: Zugarramurdi Cave<\/strong>. A name that\u2019s hard to pronounce the first time but impossible to forget.<\/p>

The cave became very famous thanks to \u00c1lex de la Iglesia\u2019s film, but its real history is much older and even more fascinating: we\u2019re talking about one of the biggest witchcraft trials in Spanish history.<\/p>

<\/p>

The story the kids won\u2019t forget: the coven and the Inquisition<\/h4>

In 1610, the Inquisition Tribunal<\/strong> investigated 40 women from Zugarramurdi, accused of practicing witchcraft and holding covens in this cave. Eleven of them were sentenced to die at the stake. A dark and real story that, told tactfully, sparks huge curiosity in children.<\/p>

“When we entered the cave and saw the main gallery lit up, with the Infernuko Erreka stream running along the floor and the rock walls closing in around us, we understood perfectly why this place inspired so many legends.”<\/div>

<\/p>

The visit inside: what to expect<\/h4>

Zugarramurdi cave is actually a large natural rock arch<\/strong> through which the Infernuko Erreka<\/em> stream flows \u2014the stream of hell in Basque\u2014. The main gallery is spacious, perfectly lit and signposted. The full route takes between 45 and 60 minutes<\/strong>, very manageable with children: there are no dangerous sections or total darkness.<\/p>

Relative fear, total fascination. The stream running along the cave floor seemed amazing to them. The most repeated question: “Did witches really dance here?”<\/em> According to legend, yes. And that was enough for them to keep talking about it for the rest of the day. \ud83e\uddd9\u200d\u2640\ufe0f\ud83d\udd25<\/p><\/div>

The Witch Museum: don\u2019t miss it<\/h4>

Right next to the cave is the Zugarramurdi Witch Museum<\/strong>, which complements the visit excellently. We couldn\u2019t go in because it was fully booked for that day. Moral of the story: buy tickets online in advance<\/strong>, especially in high season and on long weekends.<\/p>

How our Saturday ended: tired and delighted<\/h3>

When we got back to Casa Angiz<\/strong> that night, the kids were already asleep in the car. No better sign possible. We had toured two historic villages in the morning and spent an afternoon among centuries-old trees and witch legends. The valley gave us exactly what we were looking for: real experiences, without gimmicks, that the whole family enjoyed from start to finish.<\/p>

If Saturday had been intense, Sunday started with a completely different energy. Calmer, more natural, more boots-and-backpack. The plan was clear from the night before: get up early, arrive in Erratzu<\/strong> early and hike to Xorroxin Waterfall<\/strong> before the crowds arrived.<\/p>

It was one of the best decisions of the trip. And one of the most beautiful family experiences we\u2019ve had in a long time.<\/p>

The Xorroxin Waterfall<\/strong> is, without a doubt, one of the great natural attractions of the Bazt\u00e1n Valley. An impressive waterfall hidden among beech and chestnut trees that can only be reached on foot, which already gives it that sense of adventure kids love.<\/p>

The route starts in the village of Erratzu<\/strong>, specifically near the parking area on Ubidea Street. From there the trail goes through the forest in a relatively easy walk with some elevation gain. The ground can be muddy depending on the season, so proper footwear is essential.<\/p>

“We did the outward walk almost alone, with the forest just for us. The sound of the water grew little by little until we rounded a bend in the path and the waterfall appeared. The kids went silent. With kids, that says it all.”<\/div>

The trail runs entirely through beech and chestnut woods, with an Atlantic forest atmosphere that becomes absolutely magical in autumn. The path is well marked and has no technical difficulties, although you need to watch out for mud on rainy days or after them, which are many in northern Navarre.<\/p>

Between the outward walk, the return and the time we spent taking photos and letting the kids explore the area around the waterfall, the full route took us almost three hours<\/strong>. A perfect amount of time for a relaxed Sunday morning.<\/p>

\u2753 Is the Bazt\u00e1n Valley suitable for small children, even babies?<\/p><\/div>

Yes, in general Bazt\u00e1n is very suitable for families with children of all ages. The villages are small, quiet and safe to walk around. Bertiz Garden has stroller-friendly paths. Xorroxin Waterfall requires boots and some care with mud, so it can be more difficult with babies in arms. Zugarramurdi Cave has no age restrictions. Elgorriaga Spa does not admit children under 3.<\/p><\/div><\/div>

With 2 nights and 2 full days you can see the most important things: Elizondo, Amaiur, Xorroxin Waterfall, Bertiz Garden and Zugarramurdi Cave. If you add Elgorriaga Spa (highly recommended), you\u2019ll need to organize your time well. With 3 nights you\u2019ll have a much more relaxed pace and can add villages like Urdazubi, Arizkun or even cross into France to visit Ainhoa or Espelette.<\/p><\/div><\/div>

Yes, a car is practically essential. The villages in the valley are connected by road, but public transport is very limited and doesn\u2019t reach many of the points of interest such as Xorroxin Waterfall or Bertiz Garden. With a car, mobility is total and the times between stops are very reasonable: no trip between the places in this article takes more than 35 minutes.<\/p><\/div><\/div>

Bazt\u00e1n can be a very affordable destination if you organize the visits well. The main activities are free (villages, Amaiur castle, forest walks). The main cost comes from accommodation, food (which is worth not skimping on) and a few specific tickets: Bertiz Garden (\u20ac3 adults, kids free), Zugarramurdi Cave (\u20ac6 adults, \u20ac4 children) and Elgorriaga Spa (from \u20ac16 children, from \u20ac28 adults with Casa Angiz discount).<\/p><\/div><\/div>
