Urdax caves, also known as the Ikaburu cave, are one of the most surprising places you can visit in the Chartered Community of Navarre. Located in the historic village of Urdazubi/Urdax, right in the Baztan valley and just a few kilometers from the border with France, they are part of a unique natural and cultural setting that attracts thousands of travelers every year.

Entering the Urdax cave is like stepping into a magical world, an underground space formed over thousands of years by the constant action of the water of the Urtxume river. Drop by drop, wise nature sculpted impressive galleries, stalactites, and stalagmites that can now be seen on a guided visit to the Urdax caves lasting about 40 minutes. A light and sound show accompanies the route, making every corner come alive and connecting visitors with the power of the earth.

But these caves are not only a natural marvel: they are also one of the most important prehistoric sites in Navarre. Flint remains, harpoons, bone needles, and Paleolithic engravings of great value have been found in their walls and galleries. More than 20,000 years ago, human groups found refuge, protection, and a place to leave testimony of their art and way of life in this grotto. That mark makes the Urdax caves a place where history and nature go hand in hand.

In addition to their archaeological importance, the caves are wrapped in an aura of mystery thanks to the legends of the lamias, mythological beings half woman and half fish who, according to tradition, inhabited the rivers and grottoes of the Navarre Pyrenees. Visitors walking through the cave hear the murmur of the Urtxume water and can almost imagine the whispers of those magical creatures that are part of Basque-Navarre folklore.

Visiting the caves in Navarre is always a rewarding experience, but few places manage to combine nature, history, archaeology, and myth as intensely as the Urdax caves. And the best part is that their location makes them easy to include in a tourist route through the prettiest villages in the area: Elizondo, Amaiur, Señorío de Bertiz, or Sunbilla. All of this makes Urdax an essential destination for anyone wanting to get to know northern Navarre in depth.

Urdax Caves: an underground treasure where science, culture, and the legends of the Baztan valley come together.

History and legends of the Urdax caves

The Urdax caves, also known as the Ikaburu caves, are not only a natural spectacle but also a place full of history. Their existence has been documented since 1808, when they were discovered by a shepherd and used as a refuge during the Peninsular War. Throughout the 19th century, they also served as a hiding place during the Carlist Wars and as a secret passage for smugglers crossing the border with France. Their silent, deep galleries offered safety in turbulent times.

But the historical value of the Urdax caves goes much further. Paleolithic archaeological remains have been found there: scrapers, harpoons, bone needles, burins, and flint fragments, showing that they were inhabited more than 20,000 years ago. Human burials and rock engravings depicting bison, horses, and deer have also been discovered. This archaeological richness makes the site one of the most important in Navarre. You can find more technical details about its geology and heritage in the project attributed to Patrimonio Geominer.

The echo of prehistory

Between 10,000 and 30,000 years ago, human groups took refuge in this environment. The galleries protected them from the cold, animals, and other threats. Some remains suggest prolonged use as temporary housing or seasonal shelter. The rock engravings discovered by speleologist Norbert Casteret in 1930, dated to the Upper Magdalenian, are part of the prehistoric artistic splendor housed in this cave. Official information and the most up-to-date visits can be found on the Cuevas Urdax website.

The legends of the lamias

Beyond the archaeological and scientific data, the Urdax caves are deeply woven into local folklore. The legend speaks of the lamias, mythological beings half woman, half fish, who once inhabited the riverbanks and grottoes. It is said that they combed their hair with golden combs while whispers echoed among the sounds of the water. Today, as you walk through the galleries and listen to the murmur of the Urtxume river, you can almost imagine those voices from ancient times. Today the tour combines archaeological explanations, light and sound ambiance, and sensory experiences that highlight the power of the underground landscape. This transformation makes the caves an essential destination within tourism in Navarre and the Baztan valley.

In the Urdax caves, science, mythology, and history merge: a living space where nature preserves the echo of our ancestors.

Geology and formation of Ikaburu Cave

The Ikaburu cave, known as the Urdax caves, was formed thanks to the constant action of the Urtxume river. Sleeping surrounded by nature, with the silence of the Baztan valley and Baztan-Bidasoa as a soundtrack, was simply spectacular.

🌙 Personal tip: nothing compares to sitting on the terrace of Casa Angiz at sunset, breathing in the fresh air and remembering what you experienced in the caves. A guide explains the karst formation, the legends of the lamias, and the prehistoric finds as you move along illuminated walkways. The experience is accompanied by light and sound effects to highlight stalactites, stalagmites, and columns. It is suitable for all audiences and is offered in Spanish, French, and Basque.
Tip: arrive 15 minutes early to organize the group and enjoy the surroundings without rushing.

</details><details>
What are the most common Urdax caves opening hours and prices?

The Urdax caves opening hours and prices can vary by season, but as a reference: in summer there are usually morning and afternoon sessions every day; in mid-season, Tuesday to Sunday; and in winter, weekends. Standard indicative prices are €7 adults, €4 children, and 0–4 years free (indicate it in the booking). We recommend checking the day’s schedule on the official website before going and booking in advance on busy dates.
Inside it stays a steady 14 ºC with high humidity: bring a light jacket and shoes with non-slip soles.

</details><details>
What what to see in Urdax and surroundings should I not miss?

Besides the cave, what to see in Urdax and surroundings includes the Monastery of San Salvador, the mill, and the traditional farmhouse area. A few minutes away are the Zugarramurdi caves, and across the border, Sara and Ainhoa. Further south, the Señorío de Bertiz offers spectacular forests and gardens. If you stay in Sunbilla, you can comfortably combine nature, heritage, and Baztan-Bidasoa cuisine.
Perfect plan: Urdax in the morning, Zugarramurdi at midday, and an evening stroll through Elizondo.

</details><details>
Is the Urdax caves family plan a good option for children?

Yes. The Urdax caves family plan works very well because of the moderate duration, the pace of the visit, and the stories that captivate children (lamias, the Urtxume river, formations “shaped like animals”). There are some stair sections, but they are short and have handrails. For strollers, baby carriers are best. Bring a sweatshirt for each child even in summer.
Turn it into a “figure hunt” with them: what do they see in the rocks? They’ll love it!

</details><details>
How can I fit the Urdax Zugarramurdi Sara Xareta route into one day?

The Urdax Zugarramurdi Sara Xareta route links four villages with a shared identity. Recommendation: start early in Urdax (cave + monastery), cross to Zugarramurdi for its cave and museum, move on to Sara for lunch, and finish in Ainhoa with a walk and coffee. If you have the next day, add the Larrun train for panoramic views of the French Basque coast.
If you stay in Sunbilla, you’ll be in the perfect position to move between the four points without traffic jams.

</details><details>
Can I take photos or video inside? Are there restrictions?

Rules may change depending on conservation and capacity. In general, photos without flash are usually allowed in certain areas to protect cave fauna and avoid damage to formations. Tripods and external lights are usually restricted. Ask the guide at the start of the tour what is allowed that day and always respect the signage.
Take advantage of the cave entrance and the surroundings of Urdax for photos with better light.

</details><details>
Is the cave accessible? What level of fitness is needed?

The tourist route is equipped with lighting, walkways, and handrails, but it still has stair sections and damp ground. No special fitness level is required, although people with very limited mobility may encounter some barriers. Wear shoes with good grip and walk carefully in slippery areas. If you have specific accessibility questions, check with the organizers before going.
Avoid smooth sandals; trail shoes or sneakers with good grip are ideal.

</details><details>
What happens if it rains or the weather is bad? Is the visit canceled?

The cave maintains a stable climate, so the visit usually goes ahead even in rain. In adverse weather situations (alerts, flooding), the organizers may change schedules or cancel for safety. In that case, they usually offer a date change or a refund according to the booking conditions in force. Check your email the day before and, if in doubt, call the support phone number.
Even if it rains outside, it’s 14 ºC inside; bring an umbrella only for the access paths.

</details><details>
Where can I buy tickets and how do I book in high season?

The most practical option in high season is to book online on the official website to secure your place and time slot. In summer and on long weekends, sessions fill up quickly. Have your confirmation ready on your phone and arrive early. If you’re traveling in a group, ask about private sessions or specific languages.
Advance purchase = less waiting.
