For centuries it was a private property, used mainly as a hunting reserve and for forestry. The abundance of timber in this area, together with its strategic location near the Bidasoa River, made the lordship an enclave of great economic and natural value.<\/p><p>Over the centuries it passed through several noble families, but its great transformation came in the 19th century, when Pedro Ciga and Dorotea Fern\u00e1ndez, its last owners, decided to give it a very different purpose: instead of exploiting it economically, they turned it into a place for enjoyment, creating a botanical garden with species brought from different parts of the world.<\/p><p>In 1949, upon the death of Dorotea Fern\u00e1ndez, a decision was made that would shape the future of the place: to donate the lordship to the Government of Navarre, on the condition that it would always be preserved as a space for nature and culture. They are designed for everyone: from simple walks for families with children to routes lasting several hours that climb to the highest mountains in the park. All of them start from the <strong>visitor center in Oieregi<\/strong> and are perfectly signposted.<\/p><h3>\ud83c\udf3a Historic Garden Route (1 km \u2013 easy)<\/h3><p>This is the perfect option if you want to start with something relaxed. It is a walk of just 1 kilometer through the <strong>botanical garden<\/strong>, where you will discover exotic species from the five continents. The route is circular and takes just about an hour, making it a favorite option for families or for those looking for a walk without great demands. During autumn, the carpet of leaves turns this trail into a visual spectacle.<\/p><h3>\ud83c\udf04 Plazazelai Viewpoint Route (5 km \u2013 medium level)<\/h3><p>This route offers one of the best viewpoints in the park. After a moderate ascent, you reach the <strong>Plazazelai viewpoint<\/strong>, from which you can see much of the Baztan Valley and the surrounding mountains. The walk is perfect for those looking for something intermediate: neither too short nor too demanding.<\/p><h3>\ud83c\udff0 Aizkolegi Route (11 km \u2013 medium\/high level)<\/h3><p>The most famous route in the park. This route leads to <strong>Aizkolegi Palace<\/strong>, a modernist building from the early 20th century that is now in ruins. Along the way you cross lush forests and, upon reaching the summit, enjoy spectacular views of all of Baztan and part of the Basque coast.
