Lan Gaua of Smugglers in Baztan Bidasoa
With the arrival of March, Bidasoako Kontrabandistak, together with Baztan-Bidasoa Turismoa, already has the 6th edition of Lan Gaua of Smugglers in Baztan Bidasoa ready. A night hike, 10 kilometers long, which this year will take place between Beintza-Labaien and Saldias (Beintza-Labaien-Pagoeta-Saldias-Aieleta-Beintza).
A walk by moonlight, in which participants will be able to feel like smugglers for one night. At the same time, they will learn “in situ” the testimony of Periko Urrutia, “Koxkorro”, who in his younger days had to dedicate himself to smuggling to survive.
Lan Gaua 2018 will take place on March 10 and the registration period is open until March 8.

Smuggling in Baztan-Bidasoa
The postwar years were not easy, with large families and little to put in their mouths. Scarcity was great and something had to be done to feed all the children and get ahead.
Smuggling, “Gau lana”, was an economic “help” for the subsistence of many families in Baztan-Bidasoa. During the day they worked at the farmhouse, in the fields,… at night they did it in the mountains, with large sacks on their backs loaded with “forbidden” goods. Taking advantage of the proximity of the border, they passed bearings, lace, liquors, tobacco, coffee, etc. from one side of the frontier to the other.

Along with March, Bidasoako Kontrabandistak and Baztan-Bidasoa Turismoak already have the 2018 “Lan Gaua” ready. “Lan Gaua” is a night walk, in memory of smugglers. This year’s edition will take place on the paths of Beintza-Labaien and Saldias (Beintza-Labaien-Pagoeta-Saldias-Aieleta-Beintza). A 10-kilometer route, by moonlight, to feel like a smuggler for one night.
Participants will also have the chance to learn smuggling stories from Periko Urrutia, “Koxkorro”, who was involved in smuggling.
